Spring Cleaning for Your Leadership Style: Declutter, Refresh, and Grow

As the days grow longer and the air fills with the bunnies, chicks and the smell of chocolate eggs, many of us turn to the tradition of spring cleaning—clearing out the clutter in our homes to make space for a fresh start.  I wonder, could we do the same to our leadership? Just like a tidy home fosters clarity and focus, a refreshed leadership style can breathe new life into your team and create space for growth, innovation, and success.

Spring cleaning your leadership style is about shedding outdated habits, evaluating your practices, and making a few sustainable improvements. Let’s explore three key areas where you can declutter and refresh your approach to leadership: communication, team dynamics, and personal growth. Each section has a challenge so by the end of this article, you’ll have at least three actionable steps to clean out your leadership cobwebs, and maybe have a chocolate egg on the way 😊

1. Declutter Your Communication Practices

Communication is the cornerstone of effective leadership. But, over time time, even the best leaders can get a little comfortable (dare I say lazy?) and develop communication habits that really don’t serve their teams. Maybe you’ve fallen into the trap of over-explaining, sending lengthy emails that get ignored, or relying on one-size-fits-all messaging that doesn’t resonate with your diverse audience.

Signs You Might Need a Communication Spring Cleaning:

  • Your messages are often misunderstood or require clarification.
  • Team members seem disengaged during meetings or presentations.
  • You struggle to adapt your communication style to different audiences.

Steps to Refresh Your Communication:

  • Simplify Your Messaging: Before any meeting or email, ask yourself, “What’s the one clear point I want to make?” Boil it down to a single, concise sentence.
  • Adapt to Your Audience: Take a minute to think like the person you are working to communicate with.  Some people prefer to receive information. Some may respond better to direct instructions, while others may thrive on stories or analogies.
  • Audit Your Meetings: Are your meetings productive, or could they be streamlined? Consider reducing meeting frequency or implementing a clear agenda with a stated purpose (make a decision, share information, gather information, etc)

Challenge: This week, record yourself during a meeting or presentation. Watch it back and identify one habit you can improve—whether it’s speaking too quickly, overloading slides with information, or failing to pause for questions. Commit to making one small change.

2. Refresh Your Team Dynamics

Leadership isn’t just about guiding individuals—it’s about building a cohesive, high-performing team. Like any relationship, teams need constant feeding. You are either growing the team or it is shrinking, there is no staying the same.  Without attention and intentional action, team dynamics will become stagnant, especially if old habits, lingering tension, or outdated processes are holding your team back.

Signs Your Team Dynamics Need a Refresh:

  • Team members frequently come to you for answers instead of collaborating with each other.
  • You notice a lack of engagement or enthusiasm during team discussions.
  • Your team’s processes feel cumbersome or outdated.

Steps to Revitalize Your Team:

  • Empower Through Delegation: Take a hard look at your responsibilities. Are you holding onto tasks that could be delegated to develop your team’s skills? By empowering the team, you create space for your own growth too.
  • Foster Open Dialogue: Create a safe environment where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, feedback, and concerns. Pause before responding. Consider using tools like anonymous surveys or structured team-building activities (like Lego Serious Play 😊).
  • Declutter Processes: Are your workflows bogged down by unnecessary steps? Collaborate with your team to identify inefficiencies and streamline processes. Remember, small changes (Kaizen) can have a big impact.  Lean and Agile are foundational for this.

Challenge: Schedule a one-on-one conversation with each team member this month. Ask them what’s working, what’s not, and what changes they’d like to see. Use their feedback to identify one outdated team habit to “declutter” and replace with a more effective practice.

3. Shed Old Habits and Embrace Personal Growth

As leaders, we often focus so much on the growth of our teams that we neglect our own development. But just like a spring garden needs watering; your leadership skills require regular care and attention. Spring is the perfect time to reflect on your habits and identify areas where you can grow.

Signs You’re Ready for Personal Growth:

  • You feel stuck in your leadership journey, relying on the same strategies without seeing new results.
  • You struggle to find time for strategic thinking or personal development.
  • You’re not tracking your progress as a leader.

Steps to Cultivate Your Growth:

  • Identify One Habit to Change: Reflect on your daily routines. Is there a habit that’s no longer serving you? For example, are you spending too much time on reactive tasks instead of proactive planning?
  • Set a Measurable Goal: Whether it’s dedicating 30 minutes a day to strategic thinking or reading one leadership book per month, choose a goal that’s both specific and achievable.
  • Track Your Progress: Like I tracked my steps, carbs and weight during my weight loss journey, track your leadership metrics. This could include team engagement scores, project completion rates, or even your own time spent on high-priority tasks.

Challenge: Choose one leadership habit to declutter this month—maybe it’s micromanaging, avoiding difficult conversations, or neglecting self-care. Replace it with a sustainable practice, such as empowering your team, addressing challenges head-on, or setting aside time for reflection. Track your progress and celebrate small wins along the way.

Homework: Your Leadership Spring Cleaning Plan

To put these ideas into action, take the following steps:

1. Assess: Reflect on your current leadership habits, communication practices, and team dynamics. Use the questions below to guide your assessment:

    • What’s one habit or practice that’s no longer serving me or my team?
    • Where do I see opportunities for growth or improvement?
    • What’s one small change I can make today to create a positive impact?

2. Commit: Write down one specific behavior you commit to changing in the next 30 days. Be clear and specific. For example:

    • “I will delegate at least one task per week to a team member.”
    • “I will spend 15 minutes each morning planning my priorities for the day.”

3. Measure: Define how you’ll measure success. For example:

    • “I will track the number of tasks I delegate each week.”
    • “I will ask my team for feedback on my communication style at the end of the month.”

4. Share: Share your commitment with a trusted colleague, mentor, or coach. Accountability can be a powerful motivator.

A Fresh Start for Your Leadership Journey

Spring cleaning isn’t just about getting rid of the old—it’s about making space for the new. By decluttering your communication practices, refreshing your team dynamics, and embracing personal growth, you can create a leadership style that’s not only effective but also sustainable.

Remember, leadership transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of small, consistent changes that compound over time. So, as you embark on your leadership spring cleaning journey, focus on progress, not perfection. And don’t forget to celebrate your wins—no matter how small they may seem.
